Tung Oil vs. Linseed Oil: Which Wood Finish Is Better?

Quick answer: Pure tung oil is the more protective of the two — more water-resistant, a harder cured film, and it doesn't yellow significantly — but it's slow: about 2–3 days between coats, four or five coats, and 2–4 weeks to fully cure. Boiled linseed oil is faster, drying overnight and curing in 1–2 weeks, but it's softer, less water-resistant, and ambers noticeably with age. Two traps catch most people: "boiled" linseed oil isn't boiled — it contains metallic driers — and many products sold as "tung oil finish" contain no tung oil at all. Whichever you use, oil-soaked rags can spontaneously combust, so lay them flat to dry.

Tung and linseed are the two classic drying oils — the finishes woodworkers reached for long before polyurethane existed, and still the most natural way to bring out grain. They look almost identical in the can and behave quite differently on wood. Here's how they compare, what the labels aren't telling you, and which one makes sense for what you're finishing.

Tung Oil: Slow, Hard, and Water-Resistant

Tung oil is pressed from the seeds of the tung tree, native to China, Burma, and Vietnam. Like linseed, it's a drying oil — it doesn't dry by evaporating but by reacting with oxygen and polymerizing into a solid film inside and on the wood. What makes tung stand out is the quality of that film: for the same number of coats it's more water-resistant than boiled linseed oil, it cures harder, and it stays close to clear rather than yellowing.

The price is patience. Pure tung oil wants thin coats, two or three days apart, four or five times over, and several weeks before it's fully cured. Rush it with thick coats and it stays tacky.

The "tung oil finish" trap. Walk into a hardware store and you'll find cans labeled "Tung Oil Finish" — Minwax and Formby's are the best-known — that contain no tung oil at all. They're wiping varnishes: an oil-based varnish thinned roughly half with mineral spirits. That's not necessarily a bad finish, but it isn't tung oil, and it won't behave like it. Real tung oil says "100% pure tung oil" on the label. If the can says "contains petroleum distillates," it isn't pure.

 

Linseed Oil: Fast, Forgiving, and Amber

Linseed oil comes from the seeds of the flax plant — the same oil sold as flaxseed oil in its edible form. It comes in two versions that matter for finishing, and the difference is bigger than the names suggest.

Raw linseed oil is simply pressed and filtered. It's food-grade, but it cures so slowly — months, not days — that it's impractical as a furniture finish on its own.

Boiled linseed oil (BLO) is what almost everyone actually uses, and despite the name it isn't boiled. It's raw linseed oil with metallic driers added — today typically manganese or cobalt compounds, historically lead — to speed up curing. The name is a holdover from older methods that heated the oil while adding driers. The result dries overnight and cures in a week or two, which is why BLO is so popular for quick, easy projects.

The trade-offs: the cured film is softer and less water-resistant than tung oil, and it yellows noticeably over time, pushing wood toward amber. On pale woods that can look dated; on some darker woods it reads as warmth.

 

Where Danish Oil and Teak Oil Fit

This is where a lot of confusion comes from, because both sound like distinct oils. They aren't. Danish oil and teak oil are commercial blends — typically linseed and/or tung oil mixed with mineral spirits and varnish or synthetic resin. Teak oil has nothing to do with the teak tree; it's named for being used on teak. In practice, Danish oil, teak oil, and "tung oil finish" are close cousins, differing mostly in their proportions of oil, varnish, and thinner.

The varnish content is the point: it makes these blends faster to build and a little more protective than pure oil, at the cost of being less "pure." If you want easy, reasonably durable, wipe-on results, a Danish oil is a sensible middle ground. If you want a genuine oil finish, buy the pure oil and read the label.

 

Tung or Linseed Oil on Walnut

 

Walnut is one of the most rewarding woods to oil. It's a porous hardwood, so it drinks oil readily, and any drying oil will deepen its chocolate brown and bring the figure up the moment it goes on. The difference between the two oils shows up over time.

  • Tung oil keeps walnut closer to its natural color, because it yellows so little. If you love walnut's cool brown, tung is the truer choice.
  • Boiled linseed oil ambers as it ages, adding warmth. That can suit walnut — though bear in mind that real walnut already lightens toward honey-brown on its own over the years, so an ambering oil pushes it warmer still. (More on that in dark walnut vs. light walnut.)

What about walnut oil? Oil pressed from walnuts is a third drying oil, and a lovely one for small pieces. Heat-treated walnut oil cures and hardens much like tung or linseed, and once fully cured it's food-safe, which is why turners use it on bowls, utensils, and cutting boards. It's slower and softer than tung oil, and if anyone in your household has a tree-nut allergy, choose a different oil.

 

A Safety Note: Oily Rags Can Catch Fire

This is the one thing about oil finishes that genuinely matters more than the finish itself. As drying oils cure, they react with oxygen and give off heat. A rag soaked with oil and wadded into a pile insulates that heat until it can build high enough to ignite — with no spark and no warning. It's a well-documented cause of house and workshop fires, and linseed oil is the classic culprit.

The fix is simple: spread used rags flat or hang them to dry outdoors or over the edge of a bin, or submerge them in water in a closed metal container until you can dispose of them. Once a rag is fully dry and cured, the hazard is gone. Treat tung oil and Danish oil rags exactly the same way.

 

Which Should You Use?

  • Choose pure tung oil for the best water resistance and a finish that won't yellow — if you have the patience for multiple slow coats.
  • Choose boiled linseed oil for speed, ease, and a warm amber tone on pieces that won't face much water.
  • Choose raw linseed, 100% tung, or walnut oil for anything that touches food, and let it cure fully.
  • Choose a Danish oil if you want an easy wipe-on finish with a little more protection than pure oil.

One honest caveat for furniture: pure oils are beautiful and easy to repair, but they offer only light protection against water rings, heat, and daily wear.
