Solid Walnut Dining Chairs

Seat height decides how a chair sits at your table. Measure from the floor to the underside of your tabletop, then compare the seat heights below.

If you're after walnut and leather dining chairs, the Oryn and Helios have genuine top-grain leather seats, both in cream. The Kael, the Japandi and the Sylvan's black option use synthetic or microfiber leather.

The Daren and Orin have seats hand-woven in paper cord, and the Daren's back panel is woven too. The Sylva is all wood, with a solid walnut seat.

For dining chairs with walnut legs and a padded seat, look at the Oryn, Helios, Kael, Japandi and Sylvan. For black and walnut dining chairs, the Kael has a black seat and the Sylvan comes in black.

For a curved back walnut dining chair, six of the eight have a curved or bent wooden back:

• Oryn: one arch that runs down into the rear legs
• Helios: an S-shaped back, steam-bent and continuous with the arms
• Japandi: a curved back panel, with the rear legs running up as back posts
• Kael: one curved back board
• Sylva: a steam-bent back panel
• Orin: a heat-bent back rail

The Sylvan's back is a padded cushion on brass rods, and the Daren's is a woven panel between turned posts with ball finials.

For a mid century walnut dining chair, the Sylva and the Orin fit the look, with splayed legs and bent backs. For modern walnut dining chairs with a simple line, the Kael and the Japandi keep the back to one board or one panel. The Orin's woven paper cord seat gives it a Danish-style look. Walnut color varies from board to board, with knots, pale sapwood and mineral streaks. If you want dark walnut dining chairs, expect that natural range rather than one even tone.

Day-to-day care is straightforward. Most pieces use a hand-rubbed hardwax oil finish; a soft cloth and a little hardwax-oil maintenance product are usually enough to refresh a small water ring or warm-plate mark.
