The Helios Rocking Chair is a walnut rocking chair on sled-style runners, 24.0 in (61 cm) wide and 39.4 in (100 cm) high. It rocks about 20° forward and 15° back.
Front legs that become runners
The front legs run straight down into the runners. A stretcher between them braces the base.
The rock is longer to the front than to the back: about 20° against about 15°.
Spindles and slats
The back is a row of S-curved walnut spindles. The seat is curved walnut slats, and the edges are rounded. Mortise-and-tenon joinery holds the main joints.
Cushions that move or come off
The cushions are a brown fabric over fiber wadding. The back cushion comes off.
The bolster slides up or down, so it can sit at the small of your back or behind your head. You can also sit on the bare walnut, with no cushions at all.
What to know first
It's 35.8 in (91 cm) deep, and the runners need room to rock behind it. The seat is 20.5 in (52 cm) deep.
If you'd like a gentler rock, the Cairn moves about 10° forward and 8° back.
Walnut, oil and the first days
Every wooden part is solid wood, and the walnut is solid American black walnut. It's Appalachian FAS-grade walnut, finished in hardwax oil.
Dust the wood with a soft dry cloth, and wipe spills promptly: the oil resists water but isn't waterproof.
Refresh it with a hardwax-oil maintenance product. There may be a slight smell when you unpack it. Keep the room ventilated.
Knots, sapwood edges and mineral streaks are natural walnut, not defects.
