Frequently Asked Questions
Why mortise-and-tenon instead of screws?
Screws take shear badly, and sitting down is a repeated impact load. Mortise-and-tenon joints carry that load wood-on-wood, which is why traditional frames outlast fastener-built ones by decades — and why we build Baxter that way.
Is a 16.5" seat too low?
It is lower than the typical 17–18" American sofa seat, and that is the design: a lounge posture with a dropped eyeline. Taller sitters and dedicated loungers love it; anyone who prioritizes easy standing should consider a higher-seat piece instead.
Will the down cushions flatten?
Down compresses in use and recovers with a shake — that is its nature. Fluff regularly and rotate the seat cushions occasionally; the fill is layered so the cushion keeps structure underneath the softness.
Will it fit through my door?
The shipping carton is about 106" long. It needs a reasonably straight run — measure doorways, hallway turns, and stair landings before ordering, and we can advise on tricky routes.
Is the whole frame walnut?
Yes — the exposed base, legs, and arm structure are solid American black walnut, finished with zero-VOC hard wax oil, with the joinery in view.
