Arlen's backrest is a curved walnut panel with a horizontal window carved out above the seat — support where your back needs it, daylight where it doesn't. It keeps the chair visually light from every angle a dining room actually sees.

The stance

The legs splay like a compass drawing, with a sculpted Y-junction under the seat where the rear legs branch. It's the geometry that keeps a 20"-wide, 35"-tall chair planted when someone leans back on two legs — they will — without a bulky frame.

What is the opening in the backrest for?

Two things: it puts the solid part of the panel exactly at lumbar height instead of everywhere, and it gives your hand a grab point for pulling the chair out. The cutout is carved from the panel, not a separate frame.

Is a splayed-leg chair stable?

That's the point of the splay — the feet land wider than the seat, so leaning and shifting stay inside the chair's footprint. The rear Y-junction is carved solid to take exactly that abuse.
