Carved, not assembled-looking

Marlowe's backrest is a single petal-shaped shell, and the seat doesn't sit on the legs so much as melt into them — the transitions are carved smooth, the way sculpture handles a joint. Underneath the flow it's still mortise-and-tenon walnut doing the load-bearing.

The sit

The shell cradles the mid-back; the saddle-carved seat spreads weight the way shaped wood does. Note the numbers: the seat sits at 19.3" — a touch above the usual 18" — which suits taller sitters and 30" tables especially well. Overall: 17.7" W × 20" D × 33.9" H.

Solid walnut, honestly finished

FAS-grade, FSC-certified American black walnut under a zero-VOC hard wax oil. The curves are where dust doesn't gather and hands always land — expect the patina to arrive early and look earned.

Yes — the shell back and the seat-to-leg transitions are shaped from solid American black walnut, then joined with mortise-and-tenon work. Run a hand under the seat edge: the curve continues where no one was required to bother.

The seat is 19.3" — is that too high?

It's about an inch above the common 18". At a 30" table it's ideal, and taller sitters usually prefer it. If your table is 28–29" or you like a lower sit, our Soren or Aro will fit better.
