The Sylvan Sanctuary walnut nightstand has an open shelf under the top and one drawer below it. The drawer sits low, between the four straight legs.
A drawer that shuts softly
The drawer runs on a concealed soft-close undermount slide. Push it and it eases itself shut, with no bang at night.
There's no hardware pull. A finger slot is cut into the front, and the drawer sides curve forward and are sanded round.
What it won't do
There's one drawer, and whatever's on the shelf stays in view. For two drawers, look at the Heritage or the Helios. And it has no cable hole.
At 19.9 in (50.5 cm) tall, it sits between the Helios at 17.7 in (45 cm) and the Estate at 20.5 in (52 cm).
Steady on four legs
We hide a 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) iron counterweight at the back of the drawer housing. It keeps the nightstand steady.
We cut each leg from one thick block of solid walnut and sand it by hand.
Wide boards on the top and front
The top and the drawer front are edge-glued from wide boards. Each board is at least 0.8 in (2 cm) thick and 3.1 to 5.9 in (8 to 15 cm) wide. There are no dead knots (the loose, dark kind) on the face.
Finish and ordering
Every wooden part is solid American black walnut, Appalachian FAS-grade walnut built with mortise-and-tenon joinery. The finish is hardwax oil. It resists water but isn't waterproof, so use a coaster.
