Platform beds put the mattress top around 16–20", and most nightstands tower six inches above it. The Helios stands 17.7" — level with the mattress, per the rule every designer repeats — so the lamp lights your book instead of your eyes.

The tray top

A raised walnut edge runs around the top: the midnight water glass, phone, and glasses stay aboard even when you reach blind. It is the single most-used feature on any nightstand, and most skip it.

Two honest drawers

Solid maple or walnut boxes — no particleboard — joined with English dovetails, riding concealed soft-close slides rated to 100 lb. Interior space is 17.5" × 13" × 5" each: books on top, private things below.

Why is it so low?

Because low beds deserve level nightstands: with a platform mattress at 16–20", a standard 24" nightstand looms. At 17.7" the Helios follows the designer rule — nightstand at mattress height — for exactly these beds. For taller beds, choose our Heritage instead.

What does the raised edge do?

It is a low walnut rail around the top. Reaching for water in the dark, you push things instead of lifting them — the rail is what keeps the glass, phone, and glasses from going over the side.

Are the drawer boxes solid wood?

Yes — solid maple or walnut boxes with English dovetail corners, no particleboard anywhere. Open a drawer and check the joints; that is the honest test.

How much fits inside?

Each drawer gives 17.5" × 13" × 5" — paperbacks, tablets, chargers, medications. Two drawers let you split the public kit from the private one.
