The Heritage is a 2-drawer walnut nightstand, 19.7 in (50 cm) wide and just as tall. The pull is carved right into the wood. There's no metal on the drawer fronts.

Wide boards, matched one at a time

We build the panels from wide boards, so each panel needs fewer of them. Side by side, the boards alternate grain direction and balance each other. We match every board to its neighbor by color and grain.

You can follow the glue lines down the side in our photos. Our walnut is kiln-dried to 8 to 10% moisture. Dry wood moves less once it's in your home.

Two drawers for the small things

Each drawer is 15.9 × 11.0 × 3.0 in inside (40.5 × 28 × 7.5 cm). That fits a pill box, glasses, a charger and a paperback laid flat. A tall water bottle won't stand up in there.

The pull is a recess carved into the front. Nothing sticks out, so you won't knock into it in the dark.

Check the height against your bed

The top sits 19.7 in (50 cm) off the floor, and the case is 15.0 in (38 cm) deep. Measure from the floor to the top of your mattress and compare. If your bed sits lower, the Helios is 17.7 in (45 cm) tall.

Four tapered legs, 4.7 in (12 cm) tall, stand under a 1.6 in (4 cm) apron rail. We thickened that rail to keep the case steady. Every corner is sanded round.

We measure by hand, so allow 1 to 2 cm either way.

What it doesn't have

There's no open shelf and no cable hole. If you read in bed every night, an open shelf is handier than a drawer. The Estate has one, plus a cable hole for your charger.

Solid walnut under an oil finish

Every wooden part is solid American black walnut, back panel and drawer bottoms included. It's Appalachian FAS-grade walnut, built with mortise-and-tenon joinery. The finish is hardwax oil, with no paint.

Fresh oil has a light smell when you unpack it. Airing the room is all it needs.

Grain, water and care

Walnut varies from board to board. Expect color shifts, small knots and dark mineral streaks. They're part of black walnut, not defects.

The oil resists water but isn't waterproof. Wipe spills soon and use a coaster. When the top looks dry, rub in a hardwax-oil maintenance product.
