Quick answer: An end table is a small table that sits at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair, as part of the seating. Side table is the broader family — any small table that stands beside something — so every end table is a side table, but a side table can also live by a bed, in a hallway, or next to a reading chair. Online guides quote conflicting "standard" sizes for each, so ignore those and use the one rule they agree on: an end table's top should sit within about 2 inches of the sofa arm, and if you're between sizes, go lower. A coffee table, by contrast, follows the seat — level with the cushion or 1–2 inches below it.
Search for an end table and half the results are called side tables; search for a side table and you'll get end tables, C-tables, drink tables, and nightstands. The names overlap because the furniture does. Here is what each term actually means, the one height rule that matters, and how to tell both apart from a coffee table and a nightstand.
What an End Table Actually Is
An end table is defined by where it goes: at the end of a sofa, or beside an armchair, close enough that someone seated can reach it without leaning. It is part of the seating arrangement rather than part of the room, which is why end tables often come in pairs, one at each end of the sofa.
That placement gives it one job — to be a landing spot for whatever the person sitting there needs: a drink, a phone, a lamp, the book they're halfway through. Everything about a good end table follows from that job, starting with its height, which has to relate to the arm of the sofa beside it.
What a Side Table Is
"Side table" is the umbrella term. It means any small table that stands beside something — a sofa, a chair, a bed, a wall — and that includes the end table. Retailers use the two names interchangeably, and in a living room they usually describe exactly the same piece.
Where "side table" earns its broader name is in all the variations an end table doesn't cover:
- Drink or martini tables — a small top on a slim stem, for the gap beside an armchair where a full table won't fit. Our Cumberland Pedestal Table is one: a 15.7-inch top over a weighted dome base.
- C-tables — a base that slides under the sofa so the top floats over your lap, for laptops and dinner on the couch, like the Suiseki Round C-Table.
- Bedside tables — a side table doing a nightstand's job, which works when the height is right (more on that below).
- Accent tables — a side table placed for the room rather than for a seat: in a hallway, a corner, or beside a window.
So the practical answer is simple. If it sits at the end of your sofa, call it whichever you like. If it goes anywhere else, it's a side table.
End Table vs. Side Table vs. Coffee Table vs. Nightstand
| Piece | Where it goes | Height follows | Main job |
|---|---|---|---|
| End table | End of a sofa, beside an armchair | The sofa or chair arm | Drink, lamp, phone within reach |
| Side table | Beside anything — seat, bed, wall | Whatever it sits next to | A flexible small surface |
| Coffee table | In front of the sofa | The sofa seat | Shared surface for the whole seating group |
| Nightstand | Beside the bed | The mattress top | Bedside surface, usually with a drawer |
The middle column is the useful one. Each of these tables is sized against a different piece of furniture, and that is a better guide than any "standard" dimension.
How Tall Should an End Table Be?

If you compare published end table guides, the "standard height" moves around a surprising amount — you'll find 18 to 24 inches, 22 to 26 inches, and 22 to 30 inches, sometimes with the end table and side table ranges swapped from one guide to the next. That spread is the clue: there is no standard end table height, because there is no standard sofa.
What the guides do agree on is the rule. Keep the tabletop within about 2 inches of the height of the sofa arm. Measure from the floor to the top of the arm, then shop in that window:
- Sofa arm at 23 inches → look for an end table about 21 to 25 inches tall.
- Between two sizes? Go lower. A table that rises above the arm blocks your elbow and makes you reach up and over; one slightly below just reads as tucked in.
- Low modern sofa? Measure anyway. Low-slung sofas and track arms can sit well below what older guides assume, and a "standard" end table will tower over them.
- Armless sofa or a chair? Use the seat instead and go a little higher, so the top is easy to reach from a seated position.
A few of our own tables, for reference: the Orbit Side Table and the Sylvan Z-Table both stand 22 inches tall, which suits a typical sofa arm. The Kurumi Side Table is 18.9 inches, which fits a lower sofa.
Height is the measurement that matters most, but check the footprint too. The top should hold what you actually put on it — a lamp and a drink need more room than a drink alone — and the table shouldn't jut past the front of the sofa into the path people walk.
Coffee Table vs. End Table
The easy confusion here is height, because the two are measured against different things. An end table follows the arm; a coffee table follows the seat. The usual rule for a coffee table is to sit level with the sofa cushion or 1 to 2 inches below it, which is why most coffee tables land around 16 to 18 inches tall — well under any end table.
Coffee tables also serve the whole seating group, not one seat, so they are long and low where an end table is small and tall. Our Heritage Coffee Table, for instance, is 15.7 inches tall for sofas with 16 to 18 inch seats. The full range is in our walnut coffee tables collection.
Can You Use an End Table as a Nightstand?
Often, yes — a nightstand is just a side table with a different height reference. Beside a bed, the top should sit roughly level with the top of the mattress, so the question is whether the end table's height matches your bed. A low end table can make a good nightstand for a platform bed. That is the dual role the 18.9-inch Kurumi was designed for.
What you usually give up is the drawer. Most nightstands have one, and most end tables don't. If you want somewhere to put away chargers and glasses, look at our walnut nightstands. For bed and nightstand sizing in detail, see our bedroom furniture size & layout guide.
Whichever room it ends up in, a small table gets a lot of use: it is knocked, wiped, and moved around. That makes a good case for solid hardwood, which can be sanded and re-oiled locally when it gets marked; a veneered top can't. Every end table, side table, and C-table we make is in our walnut side tables collection.

- Published end table and side table sizing guides: they consistently put the tabletop within about 2 inches of the sofa arm, and recommend the lower size when you're between two. Their quoted "standard" heights conflict (18–24, 22–26, and 22–30 in).
- The Perfect Height for Your Coffee Table (Bob Vila): the coffee table should be level with the sofa seat or 1–2 in lower, so an 18 in seat pairs with a 16–17 in table.
